DIY: Child’s Poncho Pattern and Tutorial

Ponchos are back this season and are a perfect fall accessory. I considered buying one, but my common sense kicked in and said, “Why not just sew one up?” I still have a lot to learn about sewing, but knew a poncho would be an easy project.

While making a poncho for myself (tutorial coming soon), I decided to also sew one from fleece for my niece’s birthday. I searched the web for a basic poncho pattern/tutorial for children, but most are for the no-sew variety. Sure, kids grow fast and fleece is great to use as it won’t fray, but I still wanted to create a poncho that looked neat and had seams.

For her poncho, I selected anti-pill fleece and some pom-pom trim. Now is a great time of year to stock up on fleece; it’s been on sale just about every week at the fabric stores. Check out this beautiful girl in her new fall fashion piece:

Note: this poncho was based on a 9-year old girl of average weight, so you may want to adjust the width/length of the poncho for your child. Also, this neckline ended up wide, similar to a boat-neck. Worn over clothing it may be perfect for your child, but you may want to shorten it a couple inches anyhow. Just make sure it’s large enough to slide over their head!

Directions:

1. Cut your fabric based on the pattern below.

2. Place one piece on top of the other, right sides of the fabric together so each side matches up with the other piece.

3. Sew a 1/2″ hem around the entire neckline (E). You will NOT be joining the fabric of both panels together on this side. Since the fleece won’t unravel, there’s no need to sew a proper hem. I simply folded the fabric over once.

4. Sew a 1/2″ seam on sides A and C, sewing both panels of fabric together. These sides will be the seams over the arms.

5. Sew a 1/2″ hem on sides B and D. You will NOT be joining the fabric of both panels together as you did in step 4. These sides will be the bottom edges of the poncho.

6. Trim any loose thread at the ends of your stitching.

7. Press your seams on sides A and C.

8. Turn the poncho right-side in and sew a trim around the neckline and/or bottom of the poncho if desired.

9. Have your child model their poncho and snap photos furiously like the paparazzi.

Thank you for sharing. After dilly dallying about how to cut on the fold so that my pattern would be up the right way, I whipped this up in less than 30 minutes. And my 8 year old loves it!

Thank you so much for this pattern! I made a similar poncho for a friend’s adult daughter about 15 years ago from a blanket – and they wanted me to replicate something similar for her 4-year old grand daughter – but this time out of 1 metre of fleece. Since I don’t have very specific measurements except for little girls height – I’ll just do my best. Wish me luck – as I need to get this done in a few days – for a long drive to North Carolina from chilly Montreal – so both Mum and daughter will have their own cozy poncho’s to wear on the trip :) Merry Christmas!!!!
