You Know You’re Aging When…
... history repeats itself. Let's take a look at how during the short-ish span of my life so far.
At the tender years of 34, I find myself reflecting on aging more than ever. One thing in particular is how trends and fads recycle. Look at how the fashion from the 80s and 90s have experienced a resurgence. Currently, neon is a huge trend in both clothing and decor.
Leggings made a big comeback a couple years ago and are still a staple in many women’s closets. Hell, even harem pants (or as we called them, Hammer pants) made a comeback.
When I was a teen, I wanted bell-bottom jeans. My mother took great pleasure in telling me that that’s what SHE used to wear at my age. See, during the early 90s, the hippie look was coming back (or maybe it just repeated for me?). I also had a flowy, silky blouse I loved wearing with vests… in between the days I rocked my flannel vests.
When I was a pre-teen, I had a bicycle passed down to me. I wanted a ten-speed, but this was a 3-speed. The real issue I had though, was how OLD and brown it was. I was so excited to finally get a 10-speed bike in the colors typical to MY time period: purple and pink… and fit in with everyone else.
Fast forward to today, and I’d ride that brown bike in a heartbeat. Of course, I’d probably spray paint it to revamp the color, but its vintage appeal would’ve stolen my heart. My personal style leans towards the 50s and 60s with a little modern edge. My decorating style is very much influenced by mid-century modern design. Just recently, I scored a mint green Hamilton Beach drink mixer at an antique mall:
I fell in love with it upon first sight. I’ve been working at following my heart when it comes to shopping, because I’ve bought many an item that I didn’t fall for & didn’t end up using much after all. Most of its appeal of the mixer was its retro color and style (which is perfect for my kitchen’s decor).
All this makes me wonder what of today’s trends will become recycled down the road… Will Ikea furniture and skinny jeans be considered vintage treasures? Will we look back on photos of ourselves and groan… only to repeat the style years later?
My stepmom told me, “You’ll feel old when your music shows up on those Time magazine music collection infomercials.” Thankfully, I think we have a ways to go before New Kids on the Block is part of those compilations.
