How To Give Your Bedroom a Mini-Makeover
Rearrange your furniture. When I moved, I was excited to gain another bedroom to use as my workspace… but I hadn’t realized the new apartment would also mean a larger master bedroom. Schwing!
The extra space gives me more flexibility in furniture arrangement. I placed the bed on the farthest wall, distanced from everything else in the room. Doing this adds to the airiness of the room’s energy and helps the room feel even more spacious.
Another way I rearranged my furniture was to separate the three black dressers I have. Two of them are small and narrow, so I moved them into my closet. This allows me to stay organized and keeps the closet looking neat and orderly. Moving them has also helped decrease the visual weight in the bedroom from all the dark furniture,
Rearrange your decor. First, remove all the decor and accessories from your bedroom. Place it in a pile somewhere outside the room. Study your stripped down, rearranged room… breathe it all in… then visualize how to add these items in a different way.
When you re-decorate, the changes don’t have to be dramatic. Even the same vignette or arrangement in a different location of the room is a makeover. For example, I kept a similar set-up of the white shelves shown above, added a small piece of art, and arranged the bowls & accessories differently.
My dresser area also received a decor makeover. To coordinate the whitewashed bamboo blinds with the remaining dresser, I could only use one set. No worries, as I was then able to use the other two blinds in my living room. Details from that makeover to come in the near future. 🙂
I continued to partner the blinds with the hanging paper lanterns. The vignette on top of dresser also received a rearranging of decor by swapping out an item and in using the next tip…
Revamp an accessory. I repainted this tray with a cool, light gray (the same color used on my bowtie dressers) and glued cowrie shells to the rim. I also glued paintable wallpaper to he inside and added legs with wood doll head beads, chosen to give the tray a more modern look. This tray wasn’t actually used in my bedroom previously, because I’d been working on it and hadn’t the chance to show it off yet. But I think you catch my drift.
Create a sacred space. The next piece of the lite bedroom makeover was creating my sacred space. I’d been intending to do it with my old bedroom, but kept procrastinating. Armed with more space and the rope side table I crafted, I carved out my meditation space in this corner of the bedroom. You can learn more on about how I created my sacred space on my last blog post and my tips for creating a sacred space in this post.
Update your fabrics. This step can be as simple as buying new pillowcases, adding a rug, changing the blanket (or cover), or sewing up a throw pillow. How I accomplished this was by changing the fabric on my DIY padded headboard.
When I first moved in, I kept the dark brown fabric on the tiles, a faux bois print. In my last bedroom, this dark fabric headboard helped balance the black dressers, as they were positioned across from one another. But with my new bedroom, the room needed less darkness. So, I recovered the foamboard squares in Osnaburg, which ties in beautifully with the beachy, natural vibe of the room’s decor.
That’s it! Making over your bedroom (or any other room) can be easy and budget-friendly if you follow these tips. The next room I’ll be sharing is my balcony—in pink! I’m pretty stoked about it and have been spending lots of time out there.
