How to Make Chalkboard Labels and Stickers
One of my New Years resolutions was to cook more, so to help meet this goal I’ve been making my kitchen more efficient. Since my kitchen is lacking in cabinet and drawer space, I opted for vertical storage for my spice collection. I created this by hanging two IKEA Ribba picture frame ledges.
I love the look of glass jars for storing spices and ingredients. Jars help add a feeling of order to a kitchen, plus using repetition in your decor is pleasing to the eye. These 3 oz. spice jars are from Bed, Bath, & Beyond for $1 apiece.
You will need:
-Self-adhesive white contact paper
-Chalkboard paint (I used Michael’s Craft Smart Acrylic Chalkboard paint, mixing my own color with black and turquoise)
-Chalk
-Paintbrush
-Pencil
-Scissors or Exacto knife
-Paper towel or clean rag
-Stencil (optional)
-Chalk marker (optional)
1. Paint your contact paper with the chalk paint in a smooth layer. Apply as many coats as needed to get opaque coverage.
2. Once your paint is dry, prime the painted area by rubbing a piece of chalk on its side. Erase the chalk with a dry paper towel or rag.
3. Trace your stencil onto the contact paper. (I like to make stencils by recycling cereal boxes.) Cut our your label with scissors or an Exacto knife.
4. Finish your label with chalk or a chalk marker. I prefer using a chalk marker since it doesn’t rub off as easily once dry.
I love that these chalkboard labels can easily be removed from the jars, compared to the permanence of painting the glass itself. Plus there’s no baking, no spray paint, and creating the design is much easier. This tutorial would also work well to create stickers for the kiddos, gift tags, or even just a temporary chalkboard for your wall.
Have you created any chalkboard projects lately? Do you like to organize all your spices and other ingredients?

That looks great. What a neat idea. Oh, and I love IKEA, so any project that can somehow use an IKEA product always gets an A+ in my book. 🙂
LOL, me too! I should own stock in Ikea for as much as I spend money there. Thanks for commenting!
What a great idea. I have to look for the teal colour.
Thanks! It’s Turquoise with a very small amount of black added.
What a great idea! I need to get one of those chalk pens. I just finished up a chalkboard project too – Inspirational Pet Signs with cute little leash hooks. 🙂
Thanks! Your project sounds great too! I was hesitant on the $4 pricetag for the pen, but it was worth it. It is so much easier to use than chalk!
great idea! I’ll have to give this a try
Thanks! I appreciate your comment!
These look so cute and a great use for chalkboard paint. Thanks so much for linking up to Thriving on Thursdays at Domesblissity. I’m featuring this one at tomorrow’s party.

Awesome, thank you!
Thank you for sharing this cool chalkboard label project at last week’s Get Crafty Friday party. Your labels have been featured this week! I hope you will stop by and share with us again!
Yay! Thanks so much!
That is really cute! And it totally matches. I really like it. Thanks for linking it up to Snickerdoodle Sunday!
Thanks! I appreciate your comment!
This is awesome! I’ve never really worked with contact paper…would it stick to the front fascia of a refrigerator? I don’t want to convey the whole fridge to a chalkboard, I learned the hard way that dry erase markers & our fridge don’t mix, and the marker board I bought is too heavy for magnets to hold up, so this could be perfect!
Thanks! Contact paper should stick to a refrigerator, although it may not stick well if it’s textured. (Something to also consider for writing on the contact paper.) I would also clean the surface really well before applying the paper, so it can adhere better. If it’s got any dirt or grease on it, that will prevent it from sticking well. Good luck!
Thank you! I think I might use some decorative magnets along the edges to help it stay up.
Also, the chalkboard paint you used /have pictured here looks like an acrylic (based on just the packaging). I have the Rustoleum canned variety…do you know if that is okay to use instead?
Thanks again!
You’re welcome! Yes, I used an acrylic chalk paint. I haven’t used the Rustoleum kind, so I can’t say how well it would work. I think I’ve heard of actual chalkboard contact paper, so that may be worth looking into.
I think I’ll try the Rustolem mixed with an acrylic color first since I have both already. Did you just mix the paints in undetermined amounts until it got to the color you wanted, or is there a certain ratio to use (to ensure it remains chalkboard paint)? Thank you!
I didn’t use any ratio when I made it. I imagine you’d at least want to have more of the chalk paint than the acrylic, to ensure the chalk will adhere.
