Blissfully Bohemian Bedroom Makeover
My goal in this bedroom makeover consisted of a tried and true concept plus experimenting with something new. I prefer my bedroom to be a peaceful, airy sanctuary to which I can unwind. To create this vibe, I’ve always used a neutral color scheme. But this time, I combined the relaxing vibe by experimenting with colors I don’t use: a pale yet warm salmon shade, splashes of rosy pink, and mixed metallic accents.
I like minimal clutter, but overall minimalism just isn’t my thing. With this makeover, I set to create a bohemian-meets-beachy-meets-shabby-chic mood to the room.
Here’s some before & after shots to show you just how blah the room was at first. Honestly, I originally decorated my bedroom with only a handful of items… just enough so the room felt a tad homey when I moved in.
And now the great details…
The first part of the bedroom makeover was creating an accent wall. I fell in love with the idea of using a light pink and after a few test runs, selected Behr’s Shrimp Toast. It was important to use a shade that wasn’t too pink nor too bright. This color has a complexity that’s flattering in all lighting.
I also created a romantic, canopy-inspired “headboard” with fabric, a bamboo rod, and various natural beads. New pillowcases were sewn to tie in pops of color and pattern.
The bed received another revamp with a patchwork bedskirt I sewed from scraps and a few extra fabrics I bought. Crochet trim was sewn to the bottom of the bedskirt for a touch of femininity. The bedskirt is held in place with spiral upholstery pins attached to the top of the box frame.
Hanging above my bed is one of my favorite parts of the makeover: a pendant light I scored at Interior Traders, a local consignment shop. I don’t know who the manufacturer is, so if you know, please share!
In lieu of nightstands, I used a dresser and desk placed on the walls parallel to the bed. My dresser was originally black and received a DIY chalk paint makeover so it would match the cool airiness of the room. Jewelry is displayed above the dresser on hooks and a repurposed wicker basket. Also featured is a vintage round mirror passed down to me from my mother, so it has sentimental value.
On top of the dresser is a generic wood tray I customized to fit into the room’s decor. I used the same light salmon paint from my accent wall, gold and champagne craft paint, and a lotus motif in the corners to make it unique and one of a kind.
This artist’s mannequin was repurposed to provide more jewelry storage. Lace trim was added to the lampshade to give it a touch of sweetness.
On the other side of the bed is a Parsons desk—this is the old man’s side of the bed. I left the desk as is, but it may get a tiny makeover in the future. In the meantime, I dressed up this part of the room by creating a wall hanging with a bathmat and foamboard. I love the circular design of the mat plus it adds subtle texture to the space.
These candle pedestals were bought at a thrift store and made over with spraypaint. When lit, these candles really add to the romantic, bohemian mood in the room.
Another part of the breezy bedroom vibe comes from these sheer window panels. The curtains were doubled up, hung with clip-on rings, and each panel was swept back with DIY beaded tie-backs.
This little birdie was reincarnated with a few coats of Rustoleum’s Universal spraypaint in Champagne Mist. This color was used throughout the room instead of the standard gold I intended, since it’s a muted gold. Having at least one animal item in each room is one of my personal decorating rules.
Decorating with plants in each room is another personal rule. In the corner near the window sits a pothos and aplant stand I made with an IKEA Marius stool. This IKEA hack was very easy— I simply glued polished hemp rope on the top with hot glue. Because this rope is so soft, the plant stand can double as a seat.
Hanging on the accent wall are peace lilies in DIY macrame plant hangers. The pots are terra cotta, spray-painted with the same beige gold (Champagne Mist) used throughout the room.
Moving to the foot of the bed is my sitting/reading area. I brought up one of my outdoor chairs since its design fit so well into the decor. Next to the chair is my DIY rope side table, still holding up very well! The vintage mirror on the table is a score from another local consignment shop, Oldfangled.
Hanging above the chair and table is an abstract painting I made just for this room. To create this piece, I layered the paint from the accent wall and various shades of acrylic craft paint and. I watered down some of the paint to achieve the watercolor effect.
It feels great to finally be done and have a room that feels so relaxing to be in! I love having a “getaway” type of bedroom and love all the feminine, eclectic details.

Yes, it’s neutral, neutral all the way in our peaceful master bedroom.
Your madeover master is divine! Great job! My favorites are the wood tray and THAT BATH MAT! So it could be a bulletin board even! How cool of an idea was that! All the softness of this space and the natural elements are pleasing indeed. Really great efforts that paid off.
Happy week,
Kelley~
