Diary of a Home Office Makeover: Part 2

I've been working at this office makeover for too long. Last week, I hit a creative block. While creating a mini-gallery wall, I realized how my efforts matched my mood: overwhelmed. It was then that I saw the need to redefine my goal for making over my office. My new goal for my home office makeover: a clean, bright space punctuated with bits of color. Since my office is small and packed with a lot of stuff, it’s best to limit color to small doses and use mostly white.

The other part of my new plan is to first complete things needed for function and then focus on decor. This saved my sanity greatly! I made a list of things I wanted to do and then categorized them as function or decor.

“Function” includes items like storage, surface area for working, tools for planning projects, etc. “Decor” consists of small tasks like artwork or a vignette for my desk.

Of course, the functional items also require a decorative aspect to them. One example is my gold tool collection and steel pegboard.

On a recent spraypainting binge, I made over my tools with gold spraypaint so that they could be proudly displayed. The steel pegboard is the same one I used in my kitchen makeover and is very sturdy. I love how these add glam to the office and are now easily accessible.

Another functional item I’m adding is a huge dry erase board. I love to jot down ideas and tasks for my DIY projects and blogs, so this is a godsend. Instead of buying an actual dry erase board, I’m using this large frame I bought from a local consignment store:

This obviously isn’t my style, so I’m spraypainting it white to make it modern. This frame will keep the room feeling light yet bring just enough detail for a visual treat. A second bonus of this frame is I can see myself using it in another room in the future. I’m big on decor & furniture that can be swapped between rooms.

Speaking of swapping items, I brought in the two Expedit bookshelves from my living room and used them for storage. Expedit bookshelves are my favorite IKEA items because they’re so versatile.

Before I redefined my plan, I did accomplish some mini-decor projects like revamping these planters. Using natural elements for the planters helps add warmth to the room without using color. The large one was made over by gluing polished hemp rope around the sides.

Another makeover I completed was revamping my other desk with white and gold:

I used Americana Chalk Paint in Everlasting to avoid sanding and priming. The legs received a few coats of gold spraypaint and the tabletop has a bit of distressing with gold underneath. This has really lessened the visual weight in the office.

I still have a few more functional items to buy and then I can focus on the small decorative touches to tie it all together. Hopefully, it won’t be much longer!

When making over a room, is there a method to your madness or do you just wing it? What’s your favorite part of a room makeover?
