DIY: Kate Spade-Inspired Gemstone Coasters
My inspiration for this easy DIY were these coasters I spotted:
While I loved the bright colors, they wouldn’t work with my decor. So I created my own version, customizing them to the colors in the living room with craft paint and the same latex paint I used on the walls.
To start, I chose coaster tiles that you can buy at the dollar store or craft store. Originally, I was going to make coasters from ceramic tile, but I didn’t like the notches on the sides. I wanted my project to look less DIY and more designer knock-off. However, I didn’t want the coasters to look like total knock-offs, so I painted a more basic pattern to resemble the gemstones. You could also create the gemstone pattern by printing it and decoupaging it to the coasters.
To prime the coasters, I painted a few coats of chalk paint. Primer isn’t needed, but I highly recommend using version of it. After the chalk paint dried, I sanded them lightly for a smooth finish.
I painted the coasters’ edges with the same metallic paint I used for the design. I’ve fallen hard for mixed metals lately, but have to restrain this love. Too much glam and your home ends up Real Housewife of New Jersey-inspired. To waterproof them, I painted a few coats of polycrylic. I also added felt squares to the bottoms of the coasters.
That’s all! If you’ve already got the paint and sealer, this project is super cheap. Stay tuned for my upcoming living room reveal!

These are too cute! And I can’t get enough of anything with gold!
Thanks! I’m starting to get that way too with gold, so I gotta keep it subtle.
These are so very pretty.
Thanks! I appreciate your comment!
These looks great – really decorative. A perfect gift too. I like the retro-design and colors.
/Charlotte – stopping by from the Snickerdoodle Sunday party 🙂
Thank you! I hadn’t realized their retro flair until you mentioned it, but I’m glad to see it!
I love Kate Spade but I definitely would prefer the price of this DIY more! Looks great.

No doubt! Thanks for the kind comment!
Love these- and good call about the colors. I’d need more muted blues and greens in my home, too. Might have to try these myself! 🙂 So many thanks for being a part of Snickerdoodle Sunday- hope to see your latest makes when the party starts again this weekend!
